UPDATE! w00t I'm having an ok time out here in Vegas, but I yearn to be home. I've just discovered a kickass artickle in Computer Arts magazine issue 98! ( [link]) I really want to get home and try this out with this really cool guy I drew. He's kind of an Achiles looking guy, but I dunno, I'll prolly change his hair around. Anyway, see you all in a few days!!

Hey, Terin!

You're absolutely right; that is, about how we DO sacrifice our freedoms every time we (our leaders) squeeze their hands tighter around that which is their JOB to protect. It's a catch 22; while trying to uphold, as you put it, the illusion of freedom that we have, the cost of upkeep for this freedom rises daily. The only way to truly know we are safe is to destroy that which could hurt us; and unfortunately, that causes a lot of people to be our enemies.
So that is where I would draw the line, and make a distinctin between the two, and of them, I choose freedom over protection. We're not a country that is invulnerable, we are one that is free. And that's what's worth protecting.

I mean, with economic crisis, and political views clouding their thoughts, I suppose it's expected that our leaders are willing to sacrifice freedom for a sense of security. The truth is, you're safe from nothing. Anything could happen, and that freaks out the average person. I think that's a little sad, but understandable, we were all born and raised in controlled societies, where order ruled. People have to understand that anything could happen, and all planning is simply mapping out the most optimal outcome of any given length of time. For example, you could plan to get up, go to work, come home, go work out, get online, eat dinner, watch a little TV, and go to bed, and that would be your optimal day. While looking that over, and thinking, "Wow, to think I'm just living life one day at a time, just waiting for something to fall in my lap." may be a bit unnerving, it's how alot of people spend there midlives. But on top of that, you have to take in the things that COULD happen that you don't plan for, you might be pulling out of your driveway, getting ready to go to work, when out of nowhere a car comes barrelling down the street and hits you head-on. YOu could be taking your lunch and meet the most attractive person you have ever laid eyes on. Or, your day could go about as usual. As much as we try to build a structure to our lives, in the end it's completely random. By thinking about "How could we have prevented that wreck" and taking it up to a legislative level, we're sacrificing yet another freedom for a sense of security in our extremely dull lives. If we hope to make a difference in the world, we must thrive on those random happenings, we must not give in to our "comfort zone" unless you are happy there. We take pride in our sliver of chaos (freedom) in our ordered society. But if a meteor hit the earth tomoorow, your social security wouldn't be worth a hill of beans. The sad part is, we're forced to live this way, and this, my friends, is the Illusion of Freedom.

We want our cake, and we want to eat it too.

I am reffering to Chaos and order, as we yearn for a certain degree of both. While we wish to maintain order, which as of late is seemingly dominant, we wish to have freedom. The question is where to draw the line, when are we going to say, "No, while this law will make us a safer society, it infringes on my freedom far beyond an extent I'm willing to tolerate." More on this later.
